Avira detected 97 percent of my samples, the same as Norton, Avast, and others. Results in my own hands-on tests were mixed. That's decent, but Bitdefender, Kaspersky, and Trend Micro all earned a perfect 18 in the latest report. In the three-part test by AV-Test Institute, Avira scored 16.5 of 18 possible points. It also passed two difficult tests by London-based MRG-Effitas. In four tests by AV-Test Institute, Avira earned the top rating all four times. Only three of the five independent antivirus testing labs that I follow include Avira in their lineup of products for testing, but those that do include it accord it top ratings. I'll summarize what I learned in evaluating the antivirus here. Please read my review of the antivirus for all the details. I'll cover that component in detail after going over the features that are the same. The suite includes a basic password manager, something that you don't get with the free antivirus.

Avira Software Updater appears in Avira Connect, but you must click to install it. You need to actively accept the browser extensions in Chrome and Firefox (Avira doesn't support Internet Explorer). Once installation is complete and the antivirus has run its initial "Luke Filewalker" scan, you've got a whole Avira army on hand. With Avira Free Security Suite, the installer automatically adds all those items.
